Ignorance and Semantic Tableaux: Aliseda on Abduction

چکیده

This is an examination of similarities and differences between two recent models of abductive reasoning. The one is developed in Atocha Aliseda’s Abductive Reasoning: Logical Investigations into the Processes of Discovery and Evaluation (2006). The other is advanced by Dov Gabbay and the present author in their The Reach of Abduction: Insight and Trial (2005). A principal difference between the two approaches is that in the GabbayWoods model, but not in the Aliseda model, abductive inference is ignorance-preserving. A further difference is that Aliseda reconstructs the abduction relation in a semantic tableaux environment, whereas the Woods-Gabbay model, while less systematic, is more general. Of particular note is the connection between abduction and legal reasoning.

Model-Baded Abduction via Dual Resolution

This papers presents δ-resolution, a dual resolution calculus. It is based on standard resolution, and uses appropriate formulae equivalent to disjunctive normal forms, instead of conjunctive normal ones, as it is the case for resolution. This duality is then useful to create a calculus for abductive processes, as a way to construct a set of abductive solutions. The proposed calculus is compare...

Abduction via C-tableaux and δ-resolution

The formalization of abductive reasoning has received increasing attention from logicians. However, few work is found beyond abduction in propositional logic, given that in a first order formalism, the undecidability problem naturally appears, and therefore an abductive problem cannot even be appropriately formulated. Still, many applications in artificial intelligence allow finite domains to w...

Abduction through Semantic Tableaux versus Abduction through Goal-Directed Proofs∗

Very few philosophers of science will object to the idea that abduction plays a key role in scientific reasoning. Still, the logical foundations of abduction have been seriously neglected, both by logicians and philosophers of science. For centuries, the former have discarded abduction as a fallacy (“affirming the consequent”), about which nothing ‘decent’ can be said. The latter are usually mo...

Abduction through Semantic Tableaux versus Abduction through Go

In this paper, we present a goal-directed proof procedure for abductive reasoning. This procedure will be compared with Aliseda’s approach based on semantic tableaux. We begin with some comments on Aliseda’s algorithms for computing conjunctive abductions and show that they do not entirely live up to their aims. Next we give a concise account of goal-directed proofs and we show that abductive e...

Abduction in equilibrium logic

Equilibrium logic is a system of nonmonotonic reasoning that generalises answer set semantics for logic program~ to a syntactically broader class of theories. The paper discusses the problem of abduction for equilibrium logic, making use of tableaux systems for equilibrium entailment presented in (Pearce, de Guzm(m, Valverde 2000b). An algorithm for generating potential abductive explanations i...
